It depends

Is it gas or electric? If it is flame-fired, the tank will ultimately develop small cracks near the bottom, where the hot flame and the cold water in the tank meet. Most units these days only warranty the tank for 8-9 years so you may be living on borrowed time.

Electric units can last a long time. The worst that could happen is you may need to replace a heating element or a thermostat.

To add to the below discussion, when my propane fired tank unit died a few years ago, we went tankless and it worked out great. In some cases, BobG is right but it is worth having someone give you an estimate. Our changeover was pretty straightforward. The up front cost will be higher but they use less gas and pay themselves off
